Program Objectives

TheManagementAcademy will offer participants the opportunity to:
  • Engage in a unique, South Carolina specific curriculum led by best in class state, regional, and national presenters
  • Enhance the level of professional confidence in their ability to succeed and lead as a healthcare manager
  • Develop the networking and interpersonal skills necessary for communicating with other managers within their own organization
  • Develop management skills and leadership competencies that will help advance the mission of their departments and organizations
  • Develop an interdisciplinary network of peers from hospitals across the state to discuss and share best practices and key trends


Who Should Participate in TheManagementAcademy?

  • New managers in hospital administration, nursing, or ancillary services
  • Potential management candidates
  • Middle managers
  • Employees with limited management experience or those who have not had management training


Program Tuition

The cost of TheManagementAcademy is $3,500 per participant and includes training, all necessary materials, all accommodations, plus most meals (we will allow three nights for participants to make their own dinner plans).

Due to increased demand, we have increased enrollment to a maximum of 33 participants. Because TheManagementAcademy offers personalized instruction and coaching we cannot exceed 33 participants. To ensure a diverse class, SCHA will accept no more than five candidates per hospital.


The Schedule

TheManagementAcademy includes five two-and-a-half day sessions held in convenient in-state locations.

TheManagementAcademy’s core curriculum includes five modules with several content areas to strengthen and develop the various skills and competencies. Each session lasts two and a half days.

TheManagementAcademy has selected faculty members from private business and the healthcare industry. Each of these individuals is responsible for driving results in their organizations. Jeffrey Black
As a former television anchor, talk show host and reporter in Birmingham and Los Angeles, Jeffrey Black, principal Black Sheep Reputations, delivers a unique perspective to training leaders and company spokespeople. His extensive client list includes, General Electric, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, six NASCAR racing drivers and teams, Kodak, The Home Depot, M&M/Mars Candy, Masterfoods USA, Mattel Toys, UPS, Northern Arizona University, Progress Energy, BMW and numerous educational, non-profit and financial institutions. While in Los Angeles, he worked on the prime-time television drama, “Dynasty.” Jeffrey holds a Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations from the University of South Carolina and a Master’s degree in Administration and Human Resources Management from Troy State University.

Kathy Helms
Ms. Helms was selected for inclusion in the 2003–2004 and 2001–2002 editions of The Best Lawyers in America. She has extensive experience working with clients on a wide range of employment issues and enjoys working with individuals who range from team leaders to company presidents and representing management in a widely varied group of entities. Ms. Helms represents these clients not only in litigation but in active preventative maintenance, interaction, and intervention designed to create a workplace in which litigation is the exception, rather than the rule. Ms. Helms served as an intern to the late Judge Charles L. Weltner of the Supreme Court of Georgia and earned valuable business experience as a branch manager of a Georgia financial institution. Ms. Helms actively seeks to work with clients to enable them to balance the sometimes conflicting demands of the law and business and to better enable her clients to make their workplace one that is desirable to today's employees. She is a member of the American Bar Association, the South Carolina Bar Association, the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys’ Association, and the State Bar of Georgia.

Karin Hill
Karin Hill brings extensive experience in the areas of human resources and organizational development acquired while working with large healthcare systems, Fortune 500 companies and consulting firms in the not-for-profit and for profit arenas. Her expertise includes working with human resources staffs to position human resources as a strategic business partner; assessing, developing and facilitating customized training programs; and managing human resources departments, including serving as corporate human resources executive for two major Midwest health systems. She earned her BA in journalism and government from Southern Illinois University and her MBA from St. Louis University. Hill is currently on the adjunct faculty staff for Midlands Technical College in Columbia, South Carolina and serves as human resources and organizational development consultant for various businesses.

Thornton Kirby, FACHE
Thornton Kirby has served as President & CEO of the South Carolina Hospital Association since 2005. In that role he interacts with hospital CEOs, physicians, state and federal legislators, agency heads, business leaders, and educators to represent our state’s hospital community. In his role at SCHA, Thornton serves as a board member for Covering Carolina Collaborative, a not-for-profit corporation established by South Carolina business leaders to provide health insurance coverage for every citizen of our state. He also serves as Board Chairman for the South Carolina Office of Rural Health. Thornton is a graduate of the University of Virginia and the USC School of Law. Before joining SCHA, Thornton practiced law as a hospital attorney with Nexsen Pruet, served as vice president of Tuomey Regional Medical Center, and spent 8 years as a senior administrator of Clemson University. His diverse experiences in law, health care, and higher education give Thornton a unique perspective on many of the policy issues facing South Carolina.

Robert L. Lippert, PhD
Dr. Lippert is President and Managing Director of Schweiger, Lippert & Associates. He is a financial economist who has held corporate, consulting, and academic positions in the areas of finance and strategy. Dr. Lippert also serves as an Executive Education faculty member with Duke Corporate Education, University of South Carolina, and Pennsylvania State University. His consulting client list includes public and private companies of all sizes, numerous state agencies, and the U.S. Department of Justice. He has also been widely published in scientific and professional journals including: Financial Management, Journal of Financial Research, The Journal of Business Research, and The Business Journal.

Chuck Underwood
Chuck Underwood, founder/president of The Generational Imperative, consults, trains, and conducts research for corporations and organizations nationwide on Generational Workplace Strategy and Generational Marketplace Strategy.

Formally trained in qualitative research methodology by The Burke Institute, he has researched generational dynamics for 22 years and is one of the elite, seminal scholars in this discipline.

His comprehensive book on generational business strategy is entitled: The Generational Imperative: Understanding Generational Differences In The Workplace, Marketplace, And Living Room.

His national-television series – America’s Generations With Chuck Underwood – is now airing on PBS stations around the country.

Daniel Wueste, PhD
Daniel E. Wueste is director of the Rutland Institute for Ethics at Clemson University. He did his graduate work in philosophy at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (M.A., 1979) and Washington University in St. Louis (PhD, 1985). Wueste’s work has appeared in various journals including Cornell Law Review, Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy and the Canadian Journal of Law and Jurisprudence. He is the author of the chapter on professional ethics in The Biomedical Engineering Handbook, 2nd edition, the chapter on biomedical ethics in the Encyclopedia of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering, and the editor of Professional Ethics and Social Responsibility (Rowman and Littlefield, 1994).

Wueste has conducted workshops and seminars on practical and professional ethics, academic integrity, and ethics across the curriculum at many colleges and universities in the U.S. as well as the University of Kuwait and the University of South Australia.

Wueste is president of the Society for Ethics Across the Curriculum. He is an ex officio member of the Advisory Council of the Center for Academic Integrity, formerly at Duke University, which is now part of the Rutland Institute for Ethics at Clemson University.

Floy Work
Organizations guided by Floy Work have a history of success dominated by international, national, and local awards from healthcare, governmental, and civic groups. As a principal in Work Volf Consultants, LLC, she has conducted hundreds of programs on service excellence across the United States, guided scores of team-based business improvement processes, and helped leaders identify and maximize their talents through executive coaching. From a large, multiple facility Veterans Administration hospital, to a global lighting distributor, to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Work Volf Consultants helps clients improve the bottom line by applying business service excellence and team leadership best practices.


Program Information and Academy Application

Eligibility
Participants in TheManagementAcademy must be employees of South Carolina hospitals who are in management positions in nursing, allied health or hospital administration or individuals who are being groomed for management positions. The program is appropriate for new managers or those who need additional training and experience to meet the demands of the changing healthcare environment.

College and Continuing Education Credit
The South Carolina Technical College System will offer CEU’s and Clemson University will offer academic credit for completed coursework. Those wishing to receive either college or graduate credit upon completion of the program will apply for admission to either the South Carolina Technical College System, through Midlands Technical College, or through Clemson University. SCHA staff will assist eligible employees in this process at no additional cost.

Attendance Policy
To ensure eligibility for undergraduate or graduate credit, participants must be present for 80 percent of the total scheduled hours of training. Participants will also be part of a project group which will research a current topic in healthcare, write a group paper and present a summary of their findings at the final session. Groups may have to arrange for interaction between sessions.

Lodging Information
Complete lodging information to follow from SCHA staff after participants are notified of their acceptance into the 2009 class of TheManagementAcademy. SCHA staff coordinate all lodging and meals for Academy participants.

A Typical Session
Participants will arrive Wednesday afternoons for the opening session and dinner. Thursday begins with breakfast followed by all-day sessions. The day concludes with dinner and individual or group time to work on projects or assignments. The Academy reconvenes Friday morning with breakfast and final sessions, ending in the early afternoon, allowing ample travel time.

Attire
Participants are encouraged to wear business casual attire. Participants may want to bring a jacket or sweater to ensure comfort in air-conditioned rooms.

If Unable to Participate–Refund/Cancellation Policy
TheManagementAcademy formally accepts individuals who are nominated by their hospitals and who meet the Academy’s eligibility requirements. Therefore, in the event that a participant is unable to attend, sponsoring hospitals cannot substitute another member of their staff to attend. Those who are unable to attend for an unforeseen reason are encouraged to apply to future sessions of TheManagementAcademy.

TheManagementAcademy tuition of $3,500 is not refundable if a participant attends the first session but is unable to continue with the other sessions. SCHA regrets not being able to refund the fee, however, there are significant fixed costs for providing faculty and lodging for the program. If SCHA is notified of a participant’s cancellation no later than five business days prior to the start of the first session, SCHA will refund 50% of the tuition to the sponsoring hospital.

How To Apply For TheManagementAcademy
Hospitals must select nominees from within their organization for TheManagementAcademy. Nominees must then complete the following:

•    enrollment application
•    attach answer to essay question
•    attach an updated resume
•    include two letters of recommendation

Completed application packets must be returned to SCHA no later than Friday, December 12, 2008.
